Mocking Up the Galley Worktops

I’m using scrap material to mock up the galley, working out the worktop, sink, induction hob and cupboard dimensions before I cut the lower shelf. After a nasty cold, I’m slowly getting back to work and have also dry-fitted the remaining top stringers and started the collision locker hatch.

Mocking Up the Galley Worktops

You can make mockups with all kinds of things. Our friends at @sailinguma are known to hoard cardboard for this purpose. It is definitely a cheap and cheerful solution- especially if you need to store it on a boat you’re working on (Kika and Dan only recently got a half-decent workshop when their plans stopped working on the water..) but when you are in the middle of building your boat you usually have a lot of scrap (or as it is also called: material not yet used in the process!) which means you are not restricted to cardboard (and yes, I’m known to hoard cardboard boxes for this purpose anyway!) in your creative process.
So I invite you to our little galley. It definitely helps to picture things in the space. Especially when you need to work out which dimensions you want to go with (plans are slightly ambiguous and conflicting in places in case of the worktops). But it seems like we have our space quite nicely worked out.
Yes, we will have a worktop across. Our boat is going to use an induction hob so we are not restricted in terms of its location like with a traditional, 2(or 3, or 4) hob and oven… one of the reasons for this exercise is to work out the placement of things like stove and sink and use of the worktops. The other? Working out what size the lower shelf of the cupboard by the companionway should be. Partition (and stern-side end of the companionway) is at the edge of the visible worktop. Up to here plans are mostly clear - but the worktop is another thing. And since the edge of it dictates where the shelf below ends (since they form a cupboard and I want to keep it that way) you have to decide on the top before you can cut and install the bottom.
And that is why I’m doing it now. Because I’m doing bottom right now :)

There was a little radio-silence for a while, everything is ok, just got a nasty cold and I didn’t really feel like working. Getting back to normal schedule slowly. Over last few days in these rare moments when I worked in the workshop, I have installed the rest of the top stringers (still only dry fit) and started on collision locker hatch. #tiki38 #theseanation #buildingwharram #buildingadream #allelectricboat #sailinguma
