The Trouble With a 35mm Fillet
I made a mess of the first two 35mm radius fillets, using microfibres when I really should have known better. They’ll work, but I’ll always know they’re there—even under the floor.
Well. When you mess up on the boat you build, you will always remember it is there, even if hidden from view!
35mm radius fillet is a huge beast. And presents a lot of problems as there are not many things that you may adapt to become a spatula with such a radius. I feel that the mixture may be a slightly too thick or it is just my technique which sucks, after 12 months since I’ve been making fillets on the hull. Or just difficulty with access and inability to go full length of the joint with a single smooth move.
But still, much better than the first two, which (probably by inertia!) I made with microfibres. Why, I really cannot understand - I probably had something else on my mind and went through the motions, only later I started to wonder why is it soooo hard to achieve a good finish…
Well, if you want to see how I messed up with these two first fillets - I’ll probably put that one on the Patreon. Or maybe even not that, I’m too embarrassed! They will still work and fortunately they are under fixed bit of floor so I won’t have to look at them for too long…
But that’s a problem with building a boat yourself. Not that you mess up badly - I’ve seen so called “production boats” with much worse f… ups… the problem is that even if the thing is in a place ABSOLUTELY NO ONE WILL EVER SEE - you will KNOW you have messed it up. Well, good I realised that on my first pot, not third one :) #allelectricboat #buildingwharram #theseanation #tiki38 #messedup
