Narrowing the Iroko Keel Pieces
I’m still avoiding sanding hulls, so I started narrowing the iroko pieces for the keels. The dimensions also give me a useful check on the plywood, glass and epoxy laminate thickness.
I’m still not in a mood for sanding hulls - so as a distraction I started on wood.
And since our iroko pieces were not only too thick (as you may remember, I cut them in half) but also slightly too wide, now it is the time to make them narrower. The pencil line is barely visible at the photo but it guides me to make sure I’ll leave enough of wood to be able to sand it to precise shape of the keel. Most of it is 38.65-38.85mm (precisely) which gives an idea of the thickness of the laminate - the keels are a sandwich of 9+18+9mm plywood - 36mm thickness. That gives almost 1.5mm of glass-epoxy laminate on them.
The other keel (on the other hull) gets to 40-41mm. It is not due to a mistake but the fact that fairing layer on it is a bit thicker - as it shows, some 1.5mm/2 thicker - so it is less than a 1mm more on each side of the keel. Seems I didn’t put too much of it despite the difference in methods 🙂
