Fitting the First Cabin Deck Side
I spent most of the day matching the first plywood cabin deck side to the hull, working out an approach that should make the next eleven much quicker. Before that, I still have nearly 47 metres of sheer stringer to fit.
Fun begins: working 7ft high with a piece of plywood which is supposed to match several pieces of the construction (funny thing - it does!) - and make things even more entertaining, that piece of plywood has NO specific dimensions. Hanneke @wharramcatamarans sensibly didn’t assume that this pieces can be cut in advance in any way which would allow their fitting to a hull often being build 4th year at this point :) so matching begins. This single piece took me most of the day simply because it is the very first one. And as always the first new piece takes the longest time as you need to figure out if the approach you imagined is the correct one, change parts which worked in planning in your head but not necessarily work in the real world (as we know - no plan survives the first contact with the enemy!) so you do one thing, check, correct, check again, repeat steps 1-4 and again and again. And suddenly you worked out the best approach to the problem. Usually completely unique to you as there might be a general way to deal with the problem - the details make it completely different from any other approach because simply you don’t have a high enough platform or you do it from outside and others from inside etc etc.
I said, fun :) now I have it worked out next 11 cabin deck sides will show up rather quickly. Especially that these hulls, at least in theory, are symmetrical! 😂 And it seems they are close enough for that to be a matter of cutting four pieces - main cabin ones are different on each side of the hull! - and then making rough cuts for the rest which will make it significantly faster.
Actually the only thing that will make this whole thing go longer is the fact that I have to glue in sheer stringer before I fit those - and that is almost 47 m of wide board (70mm) which needs to be fixed in place. The higher I go the more the scale of this boat terrifies me :) - and funny enough, when she finally gets to the water she will be perceived as relatively small vessel ;)
Btw - received timber from a new supplier- I really didn’t think it is possible to pack timber better than Robbins Timber. Well, it is!
