Fitting the Cabin Trunk Roof
I spent a hot couple of days getting the cabin trunk roof to fit, correcting the front and back panels millimetre by millimetre. I’m still watching for sponginess in the sandwich, which I’ll be able to inspect and reinforce when I cut in the hatch.
Well, they say “man plans and G-d laughs”. B’’H - I made him laugh a lot recently.
It took me much longer to actually finish the roof - I just finished outer part and skeleton before night. And as heatwave in the UK decided to match other places and my hardener does not like 35 degrees (I don’t mind), next day was race with time (it started from 13 degrees!) But that way I only managed to get the other side and fix the roof - there was no chance of getting it laminated.
Today I was ready to do so. I even managed to employ high-tech solutions to my solar heating problem (third skylight is blocked with 65 percent shade fabric). But it seems the front and back panels of the cabin trunk where done to wrong profile (well, I know that, I had the same problem on the other hull and they were identical - I just forgot about that!). Unfortunately in this hull there is a middle bulkhead which means bending the roof slightly more would not work here. So a spend today (is already 2pm!) on slowly sanding, routing and cutting millimetre after millimetre of the front and back - cutting too much would be a disaster! Now finally roof is fitting correctly without too much coercion (belts are there to hold it in place not force it - I did not use copper wire this time).
I hope the “sponginess” of this roof is related to bad fitting not incorrect epoxying inside- we will see later. If it is still giving in that will be something to address as the first thing on the water. It seems a bit laid back approach but the thing is I’ll be installing the hatch in front of it (over the bunk) so I’ll be cutting into the roof and reinforcing edges - I can then check the foam and put some extra epoxy/microfibres mix so it is well connected and behaves as proper sandwich…
