Debugging, Learning and Loving Programming
I share the painful truth about debugging: a tiny change can consume two days, but the lessons tend to stick. Apparently, I chose this over Netflix.
Well, if you have ever seen a programming meme about debugging, I tell you a secret:
They are all TRUE 😂
My days are filled with this view - I add a new feature (or rather a smallest change to a feature!) in minutes and then spent another two days solving problems this small change actually broke. Often getting through every single of these six stages presented below within one hour (only to make another iteration the next hour trying to solve the mystery of the point 6 🤣).
But when I’m getting depressed I’m reminding myself about 2 most important points:
First - I chose that over Netflix (yes, that is kind of masochism!) - yep, seriously, I’m not doing that for money… certainly not at 2 am! (ok, that’s enough with your laughter!)
Second - that’s how you learn - yes, I am aware that there are other ways of learning. But there are only two situations in which you can be certain that you’ll never forget the lesson that I personally know and trust:
One is being sh*^ scared on your boat trying to figure out how NOT to get killed by the next wave - hopefully before the next wave kills you - and the other - spending 10 hours straight in front of the computer debugging only to discover next day, in first minute of the working day that you made a wrong function call so you were telling your program to do something completely different and could not figure out why it doesn’t do what it was supposed to do.

Yeah, I love programming! 😇
